At Turner Hire Drive we endeavour to help all of our employees reach their career aspirations. Find out what some of our current and past apprentices have to say about working with us throughout and after their apprenticeships below.

Conor MonieConor Monie (Central Reservations Coordinator)

Why did you decide to pursue an apprenticeship?

I decided to apply for an apprenticeship as I felt that it would provide me with a platform to develop a variety of business skills which were applicable to the workplace. In school I always enjoyed subjects such as Business Studies, Administration & IT. I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do when I left school but I knew I wanted to use the skill-sets I learned in these classes on a daily basis. My apprenticeship with Turner Hire Drive has allowed me to do this whilst earning money at the same time.

What do you enjoy most about working with Turner Hire Drive?

I really enjoy working at Turner Hire Drive and looking back it was definitely the right choice for me. My apprenticeship has enabled me to work towards a SCQF Level 6 Business and Administration qualification, learn valuable skills which I can apply to many different aspects of the business and develop professional relationships with individuals who have a wealth of business experience. For example, when I first joined the company, I was relatively shy. I was utilised in an administration role and managed a great deal of paper work. I then became a front facing employee, working on the rental desk. This improved my confidence and communication skills as I had to interact with customers as well as handle incoming telephone calls. I have recently received a promotion and I am now part of the Central Reservations department where I am responsible for managing bookings for the company’s largest customers.

Would you recommend Turner Hire Drive’s apprenticeship scheme?

I would recommend the apprenticeship without a doubt! Leaving school can be daunting especially if you’re not keen on going to university or don’t really know what you want to do. My time so far at Turner Hire Drive has been absolutely fantastic for my personal growth. The team I work with are really supportive and senior management have really pushed me to unlock my full potential. I feel valued by the company and I am very much aware that with Turner Hire Drive being a family run business, my work makes a difference.

Why did you decide to pursue an apprenticeship?

I joined Turner Hire Drive as an apprentice having left school in 5th Year. For me, the main attraction of the apprenticeship was that I got to earn money and work towards a Business and Administration qualification simultaneously.

How do you feel that your apprenticeship has helped you develop?

Since I started the apprenticeship, I’ve developed lots of transferable skills, including communicating, organisation and problem solving as well as my confidence in general. I’ve also been able to improve my admin skills, email etiquette and my professionalism.

Shannon FosterShannon Foster (Damage Controller)

Why did you decide to start an apprenticeship?

I didn’t really like the idea of studying at university for 4 years with no guarantee of a job that I’d like at the end of it. I also wanted to be able to earn money while learning and developing.

How did you begin your apprenticeship?

I completed my Business and Administration Apprenticeship through Glasgow Training Group in 2013 and immediately went on to become an Office Administrator within our Fleet Services department.

How has your apprenticeship helped your career to date?

Since completing the apprenticeship and becoming an Administrator I’ve been on a number of internal courses with Turner Hire Drive, including Microsoft Excel, Health & Safety and Customer Service, which has led to me being promoted to Damage Controller and the Fire Warden for the department.

Why did you decide to begin an apprenticeship?

I had completed an HNC in Beauty Therapy, but it wasn’t challenging me, so I wanted to explore different career options.

How did you get started in your apprenticeship?

I started my apprenticeship through the Glasgow Training Group. After my time in college, I realised that I wanted a more practical learning experience, and the apprenticeship allowed me to learn while working as well as earning a salary.

What’s been one of your favourite aspects of your apprenticeship?

I was made to feel very welcome and I’ve made loads of new friends at Turner Hire Drive, including Shannon who I regularly see outside of work as well now.
