At Turner Hire Drive we endeavour to help all of our employees reach their career aspirations. Find out what some of our current and past apprentices have to say about working with us throughout and after their apprenticeships below.
John Fraser (Workshop Manager)
How did you kick-start your career?
I undertook a 4 year mechanical apprenticeship with Turner Hire Drive in 2001. I always enjoyed working with tools, and after completing my apprenticeship I have worked my way up the company’s hierarchy. My roles have included mechanic, workshop foreman and 17 years on I’m the workshop manager.
How have you managed to develop your skills?
During my time at Turner, they have put me through numerous training courses. Even now long after my apprenticeship they ensure that I’m always fully equipped for my role. For example apart from all my mechanical training, I’ve been given the chance to complete my Level 3 management course as well as Excel and Financial courses.
What would you say to those considering a Mechanical Apprenticeship?
From my experience I can say that Turner’s is a great place to work and any young person looking to start a career as a mechanic should definitely consider joining us.
James Sawers (Apprentice Mechanic)
What made you want to become an apprentice?
I attended college and achieved a HNC Level 6 in digital media. I’ve always been interested in computers and how things work, but I wanted to experience something different other than a typical office job. In school I never had any intention of being a mechanic but here I am at Turners and I love my job.
What do you enjoy about your job?
It sounds cliché, but I get on great with the people I work with. This makes a big difference! Also, every day presents a new challenge so my day is always interesting.
How has your Mechanical Apprenticeship helped you grow?
My apprenticeship has been amazing for my personal growth. I’ve developed loads of job specific skills and I feel as though I can fix anything now. I’ve developed a great deal of determination and never let a job get the better of me. I’ve been handy around the house by fixing tables and chairs too!
What are your future aspirations?
From the outset, Turners were open with me and I knew I’d have a job with them following the completion of my apprenticeship. It’s inspiring to see the likes of John who started out as an apprentice just like me and he’s now the Workshop Manager – it shows the company support you and your career. My goal is to complete my apprenticeship and stay with Turner Hire Drive, I’m confident I can progress here.
What would you say to those considering an apprenticeship?
My apprenticeship has taught me that I can achieve anything I set my mind to and to never be afraid of try something different. Turners have shown a great deal of faith in me and have invested a lot into my development. I’m really thankful for this.
